Letters to Sir William Clayton, 1776-1793.

Manuscript, in multiple hands, of a collection of 26 letters to Sir William Clayton, 4th bart.; 18 from his sister Catherine, Lady Howard de Walden, and 7 from his brother-in-law, John Griffin Griffin, Lord Howard de Walden (1719-1797). The letters contain primarily descriptions of routine social activities, including declarations of affection for each other and their family members; condolences on the death of acquaintances; praise of their pious mother; and arrangements of visits to see each other. Several of the letters also mention activities in the House of Lords, including a note in 1783 which mentions the fall of the Fox-North ministry, and several letters which concern Griffin's claim to the barony of Howard de Walden and the debate about its validity in the House of Lords. Other letters concern business transactions and monetary issues, including one from John Griffin Griffin which mentions his wife's financial troubles. The first letter in the volume, dated 1776, is from Katherine to their father.
